The Wilmington Police Department is pleased to announce that Officer Joe Carcich has been selected as the new School Resource Officer (SRO) for the next school year. The SRO is a new position supported by voters in both Wilmington and Whitingham to work with the Twin Valley Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. The SRO will assist in school staff with safety and security at the schools. Through mentoring and guidance the SRO will foster the development of positive relationships with students and develop strategies to resolve problems/conflicts that affect youth and help them reach their fullest potential.


Officer Carcich was selected for the SRO based upon his training, experience, and communication abilities. He was interviewed and vetted for this position by a panel consisting of parents, police officers, teachers, school administrative staff, and students.


Officer Carcich will be attending additional specialized training prior to the start of the school year.

Since the start of the summer weather, the Wilmington Police Department has seen a substantial increase in calls for assistance for person(s) experiencing a mental health crisis or in a pre-crisis stage. To illustrate this increase, over a four day period of time (6/2-6/6) WPD responded to at least nineteen incidents related to mental health issues. These incidents ranged from destruction of private property, indecent exposure, interfering with traffic, trespassing, suicidal ideations, harassment, citizen disputes, and actual attempted suicides. 


Currently WPD is responding to emergencies as we always have but non-emergency calls can expect a delayed response during these high call volumes.

On June 7, 2024 at approximately 11:52 PM, a Wilmington Police Officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle along VT RT 100 for a defective equipment violation. During the stop, the operator's Vermont driver's license was found to be criminally suspended.


The Defendant, John Carroll, age 32, of Wardsboro VT was subsequently arrested, processed, and released on a criminal citation to appear in the Vermont Superior Court - Windham Criminal Division on July 2, 2024 at 8:30 PM to answer to the charge.

On June 1, 2024 at approximately 3:22 AM, a Wilmington Police Officer responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision on Hillside Drive in Wilmington. During the investigation, the officer detected signs of impairment and screened the operator. The operator was subsequently arrested for DUI and Negligent Operation and transported to the Wilmington Police Department for processing. 


The Defendant, Alexis J Realer, age 32, of Wilmington VT was processed and released on a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court - Windham Criminal Division on June 25, 2024 to answer to the charges.
